MIYAZAKIGYU - THE CHAMPION BRAND

Miyazakigyu is renowned for its consistent, snowflake-like marbling and distinct flavor. Japanese prefectures compete in the Wagyu Olympics every five years to crown the best beef. Miyazaki has made history by winning the Prime Minister’s Award four consecutive times, including three victories in the Meat Quality subdivision, which assesses fat quality and content. Miyazaki also won first place in the Group Award division in 2007 and 2012.

  • Miyazakigyu is trademarked by the Miyazaki Economic Development Corp (co-op) who owns the Miyachiku Plant in Japan. Sourced from the Miyachiku co-op, a collective of Wagyu farmers in Miyazaki Prefecture, the cattle are nurtured with specialized husbandry, a proprietary diet, and strict guidelines to produce their signature marbling. Only beef graded A4 or A5 qualifies as Miyazakigyu; those not meeting these standards are sold under the Miyazaki Kenyangyu brand, noted for differing quality, taste, consistency, and texture.

The top 3 volume producers of wagyu in Japan are Kagoshima, Miyazaki, and Hokkaido.

  • Miyazaki Prefecture in Japan is renowned for producing some of the world’s most premium Wagyu, and two terms frequently appear in the market: Miyazaki-Kensangyu and Miyazakigyu. Both originate from Miyazaki, but they represent different tiers of quality and certification.

Miyazaki-Kensangyu simply means “beef produced in Miyazaki Prefecture.” It reflects cattle raised within the region that meet Japan’s national Wagyu standards. This beef offers authentic Miyazaki character, refined tenderness, and premium marbling, making it a strong option for operators looking to feature genuine Miyazaki Wagyu at accessible price points.

Miyazakigyu, however, is the official top-tier brand of the prefecture. Only cattle graded A4 or A5 with a BMS (Beef Marbling Score) of 7 or higher qualify. This rigorous standard ensures exceptional consistency, ultra-fine marbling, and an elevated melt-in-mouth experience. Miyazakigyu has earned global prestige, including consecutive wins at Japan’s National Wagyu Competitive Exhibition (“Wagyu Olympics”), further cementing its status as one of Japan’s elite Wagyu brands.
